Cybersecurity: The Next Frontier in War on Terror

Since the beginning of the Internet, there have always been bad people waging cyberattacks against both the private and public sectors. While many security solutions have been put into place — and more developed each day — the bad guys often stay one step ahead.

In addition, the Computer Emergency Readiness Team of the Homeland Security Department recently reported that the number of security breaches of U.S. and private-computer networks almost doubled to 72,000 from approximately 37,000 last year.

2008: The Year Mapping Exploded

2008 proved to be the year that cartography boomed, according to an article from the Boston Globe. Here’s a relevant excerpt from that article:

“The past year saw an explosion of such maps, portraying everything from earthquake devastation to voting patterns to international reading habits – often made on the fly, by citizens, in response to events. Like their medieval predecessors, the most interesting maps are often useless for getting from point A to point B. But if you want to understand what happened in 2008, they are an excellent way to navigate the year.”

Intelligence Community Requires Strict Oversight?

While we have continually been covering news around intelligence challenges the the Obama administration will face, we came across an op-ed that goes beyond the “usual” challenges (i.e., managing the bureaucratic nature of the intel community, dealing with the post Bush intel baggage, etc.). Lee Hamilton, director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., penned this op-ed, which appeared in today’s Indianapolis Star.

Food for Thought Friday: Satellite Imagery and Archeology

Second, the number of applications of satellite imagery seems to increase everyday — it is truly limitless. For example, CNN ran this story about archeologist from the University of Alabama who has used satellite imagery to unearth some previously unknown ruins in Egypt.
