Despite Slow Economy GPS Phone Sales Rising; Consumers Still Embracing GEOINT
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
We have a firm belief that GPS/GEOINT/GIS applications will continue to grow and expand — even during slower economic times. We live in a GPS-enabled world and the technology has evolved to the point that it is a must have thing for most consumers. Well, our belief was recently reinforced when the industry analyst firm Strategy Analytics announced that GPS smartphone sales are expected to grow rapidly in the current year, driven by improved applications and strong consumer acceptance of navigation devices. In addition, shipments of GPS smartphones, like Nokia’s N97 and Apple’s iPhone, are seen increasing 34% to 77 million units in 2009 from 2008.

Spy Satellite Images Show Polar Ice Cap Melting
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief
While we all know that global warming is having an impact on the environment, particularly on the polar ice cap, new images appeared from intelligence satellites that confirm what everyone pretty much knew — it’s melting. According to the Guardian UK, the images, kept secret by Washington during the presidency of George W Bush, were declassified by the White House last week. By declassifying the images, President Barack Obama is currently trying to galvanize Congress and the American public to take action to halt catastrophic climate change caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Certainly a sea change in how our leadership approaches global warming, and it is very exciting to see how GEOINT is playing a role in raising awareness of our impact on the environment.
