Mapping of Federal Stimulus Dollars: Recovery.gov and ESRI Update Offering
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
If you are wonder where exactly the federal stimulus dollars are being spent, we recommend you check out Recovery.gov, which is the federal government’s official site for tracking stimulus spending. The site was actually relaunched yesterday and offers new data that lets site visitors see where the money is going by navigating through a series of maps. USGIF member ESRI played a key role in creating the new maps, which roll up data from all 50 states to show where federal contracts, grants and loans are going and who’s receiving the money. Users can drill down to see spending for their own state, county or locality.

Added by USGIF Category: Friday's Food for Thought, General
Welcome once again to the Friday’s Food for Thought post. We hope everyone had a productive week and are looking forward to a restful weekend. This week, on September 22nd at 5:18 PM EDT to be precise, it officially became fall. Yes, summer is a fading memory, and the theme for this post is all about autumn. For many, it is a time to circle the wagons, focus on work/school and shake off the side-effects of the backyard BBQ season. For us, it means one very important thing: GEOINT 2009 Symposium. In many ways, the GEOINT symposium serves as a time for the entire community to circle the wagons, learn and share information and gear up for a successful 2010. Scroll down to read more.

The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) has officially launched a social network for GEOINT 2009 called CrowdVine, which will serve as the space for everyone to collaborate, make connections, and set meetings with other GEOINT 2009 attendees. The editorial staff of got geoint? have spent some time on the site, and it is a most excellent tool. There are already a number of compelling discussions happening right now. And, if you want to connect with Keith Masback, USGIF President, or any other leaders from USGIF, all you have to do is “friend” them. It’s that simple. D.I.Y. GEOINT: Students Launch Camera to Edge of Space
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General, Young Rising Star
Let’s face it. Most GEOINT technologies are very sophisticated and costly. And, rightly so…they protect our troops and our nation. You can’t put a price tag on that. But, what if we told you that for a mere $148.00, a couple of MIT students launched a camera to the edge of space and took some amazing photos of earth. It is the ultimate tale of D.I.Y. GEOINT. Hey, did we coin a new term here? Is this the next trend in GEOINT? Enterprising and creative people devising ways of launching items into space. You all may recall that for $8,000, you can launch your own personal spy satellite. But, this is taking it to the next level — a grassroots, everyman-on-the-streets approach to GEOINT.

Monday Morning News Kick Off: Obama Not Dropping CIA Investigations, GIS Market to Grow 50 Percent
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
Happy Monday to all of our got geoint? readers out there. We hope you had a restful weekend and are ready to kick it into high gear. One group that is clearly kicking it into high gear are the folks at USGIF. With GEOINT 2009 one month away, the Foundation is working hard to make the event a resounding success — and it is shaping up to be bigger than GEOINT 2008 (which was an amazing event). Speaking of GEOINT 2009, since many key leaders of the Intelligence Community speak at the event, we look to focus on high-level (and some would say political) news that impacts the community. Of course, we will throw in some news about the latest GEOINT technologies. Much like the GEOINT symposia, we like to focus on both the technology and the high-level goals for the IC. So, scroll down and enjoy!

Friday’s Food for Thought: World Classic Rockers and Supergroups
Added by USGIF Category: Friday's Food for Thought
Welcome to our installment of the Friday’s Food for Thought post. Last’s FFT post, we struck a more serious tone with a tribute to those who had lost lives in their 9/11. This week, we have have decided to bring the usual mojo of the FFT back in full force with the theme of the “supergroup.” Often talented musicians leave their famous and respected bands to form supergroups like Cream, the Traveling Wilburys, Audioslave and Blind Faith. In many ways, we work in intelligence community as supergroups. If you are a prime contractor, you often pull together the best subs to form a supergroup to solve some of the most significant intelligence challenges. Oh, and World Classic Rockers — an epic supergroup — is playing at GEOINT 2009.
