Air Force Officially Cancels TSAT Program
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
Yesterday, the Air Force officially announced that it was officially canceling the Transformational Satellite Communications System (TSAT) program. In a move that reinforces Defense Secretary Robert Gates previous statements about eliminating the program, the Department of Defense has formally terminated contracts with companies that include Lockheed Martin and Booz Allen.
According to the Associated Press, the TSAT program was to provide a network of satellites to help the military integrate data for purposes such as relaying surveillance information to troops in battle. The program could have been worth up to $26 billion, but was dogged by questions over its cost and capabilities.
