Since 2004, USGIF has donated $386,000 to promising students in the geospatial intelligence field in the form of academic scholarships. Last year, USGIF awarded $86,000 to 19 recipients and plans to award equal or greater amounts for the 2011 program. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, a first step into space that shocked America and galvanized our national resolve. We responded with significantly increased public investment in science/math education and committed the US space program to manned lunar landing before the end of the 1960s, barely more than a decade after the first satellite! Consider that achievement for a moment, and compare with where we are today — decommissioning our workhorse space shuttle fleet and sending American astronauts to the space station via Russian rockets. The title of his presentation is “Geospatial Intelligence: Resolving Terra Incognita for National Security and Beyond,” and it will certainly be worthy of checking out! Basically, he will be highlighting how the geospatial revolution is in full swing, with geospatial science and technology becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives.

USGIF is hosting its GEOINT Community Career Fair on July 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Reston. This event will bring together GEOINT professionals from the Defense, Intelligence and Homeland Security Communities, industry, and recent graduates who will make connections face to face with recruiters who make hiring decisions. USGIF President Speaks at Spy Museum’s KidSpy Festival

USGIF on Sunday participated in the International Spy Museum’s KidSpy Festival. The day included demonstrations and hands-on learning about polygraphs, fingerprints, disguises and more all for kids ages 7 and older as well as their families. USGIF President Keith Masback taught the more than 250 visitors during the day about aerial and satellite imagery and the different types of platforms used to capture this imagery. The 10-minute lesson offered kids the opportunity to look at overhead pictures and guess at what they were looking. After a some helpful hints, students were applying their knowledge to analyze other imagery of the presidential inauguration, famous cities, and other notable images. It was perhaps one of the best demonstrations based on the feedback from the kids and their families.
