More News About Congress and BASIC

According to civilian satellite experts, Congress’ decision to cancel the BASIC satellite program makes good sense, and the National Reconnaissance Office can get the same satellite imagery cheaper from commercial satellite providers.  Defense News just ran this story.  The Space Frontier Foundation also applauded Congress’ move to cancel a program that can be provided by the private sector.   What do Got GEOINT’s readers think about this timely subject?  We welcome your comments, thoughts and feedback.

I think there aren’t enough birds in the sky and BASIC should roll on. There’s no way for the private sector to get funded fast enough to respond, unless there’s a 100% subsidy from the Gov’t. And in that case, might as well roll with a Gov’t program, since it’ll be outsourced to contractors regardless. Cancelling BASIC is bowing to the existing commercial company’s lobbyists.

Shame. There are unmet operational needs.
