Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief

We like to keep our fingers on the pulse of the most current and cutting-edge GEOINT applications. So, when we stumbled upon this story from Wired about using iPhones and cool apps to get real-time, situational data to the war fighter, we had to to take pause and shine a light on this.

According to the article, the Army plans to test a smartphone for soldiers that will offer mobile applications that provide access to technical manuals and maintenance records to maps and cultural intelligence. In addition, it was noted that the plan is to add an app with GPS capability that could pinpoint the user’s location, or a digital tool that would allow troops to analyze terrain.

We all know that one of the biggest GEOINT challenges is getting the right locational data, in real time, to the war fighter. This new smart phone concept (with killer GEOINT apps) is the future of GEOINT as we know it. And, it just makes complete sense on so many levels — we need to utilize the same mobile tools that make us smarter, more efficient, and more effective in battle. What do you all think?
