DGI Europe Update; Tweet Congress; Intelligence Reform; and Panetta Hearing

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Happy Monday. Today, we wanted to highlight a mix of various news surrounding the intelligence community, web 2.0 and other news…consider this post an extension of “Friday’s Food for Thought” if you will.

First up, The National Journal ran a blog panel on the topic of Intelligence Reform. What makes this post so unique is that they ran detailed comments from a number of industry experts weighing in on what needs to happen to reform the intelligence community. From policy experts in academia, the Hill and industry, this post runs a wide gamut and is very dives deep into the issues facing our community. We recommend you check it out here.

In case you all missed DGI Europe, the largest geospatial intelligence conference in Europe. Here’s the press release from the event. The event was chaired by Jill Smith, President & CEO of DigitalGlobe and included a keynote from Major General John Rose CB MBE, Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Intelligence Capability), MoD UK who discussed the future of the UK defence GIS services. In addition, the NGA was represented well with keynote addresses from Lloyd Rowland, Deputy Director, NGA, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, US and Jack Hild, Deputy Director, Source Operations, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, NGA, US.

Next up is more Twitter news. For those not familiar with Twitter, it has become the de-facto Web 2.0 application for government agencies, industry and others to communicate and engage in “the conversation.” We frequently use Twitter to update our followers on new posts, and stay current on news impacting the intelligence community. And, now Congress is embracing Twitter. In addition, if you have not already, check out GovTwit, a directory of pretty much everyone related to government on Twitter. It is a great resource if you are new to Twitter and are looking for the right people to follow.

On Thursday, the Senate Intelligence Committee will convene for Panetta’s confirmation hearing. It will take place at 2:30 in room G-50 of the Dirksen building.

Finally, we wanted to give a shout out to a blog we recently stumbled upon called IMINT & Analysis. This blog bills itself out as the “open source military analysis, strategic thinking, and Google Earth imagery interpretation” blog.

We hope you have a productive and prosperous work week.
