Friday’s Food for Thought
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
With the election over and the transition team making most of the headlines, former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig has been mentioned as a candidate for Defense secretary. Danzig – and other potential candidates – may want to read the sobering report released on Tuesday by the Defense Science Board, which calls for the new SecDef to make protecting the U.S. against weapons of mass destruction a top priority. And over at the Pentagon, expect to see John White and Michèle Flournoy walking the corridors. No strangers to the Defense Department, they are leading the new administration’s Pentagon transition.
The Intelligence Community also will be under the transition spotlight. Although both of the nation’s top intelligence leaders expect to be replaced by the new administration, Hayden and McConnell have offered to stay on board. Other IC issues the new administration can look forward to is evaluating current and future capabilities. Just recently the top U.S. intelligence acquisition official said that FIA stands out as an example of how not to run complex intelligence programs and offers lessons that should not be forgotten. Munson also said that disagreements across the U.S. national security community on several questions surrounding a proposed commercial-like satellite reconnaissance system ultimately doomed BASIC.
And some food for thought …
Is this the new Manhattan Project?
