Added by USGIF Category: Friday's Food for Thought

Happy Friday. We hope everyone had a productive and prosperous week. Once again, it is “Friday’s Food for Thought” time and we tried our best to serve up some enlightening, entertaining and somewhat perplexing things happening in the world today. Today’s theme is all about space. From Space Symposium highlights to classic David Bowie and Flight of the Concords video clips, we have it all. Scroll down and enjoy.

Let’s Figure Out How to Avoid More Satellite Collisions
One of the bigger stories coming out of the Space Symposium was the discussions between government and industry about ways to avoid satellite collisions in space. You may recall our story about how space is becoming a crowded place. Space. No longer the final frontier.

Space is the Place – For Jobs That Is…
In other news coming out of the Space Symposium, the satellite industry is doing very well despite the recent global economic meltdown. The Space Foundation released a report stating that the space industry boosted revenues by $6 billion to $257 billion in 2008, up from $187 billion three years ago. Good stuff.

Wanna Go to Space? Cough Up $35 Million
Billionaire American space tourist and former Microsoft executive, Charles Simonyi, is staying in space for one more day due to flooding at the landing site. Wow. Do you think he will be charged for that extra night? Hotels certainly charge for overage. Oh, and do you all recall several years back when Lance Bass, of N’Sync fame, did not make the cut to be a space tourist? We are guessing that he did not have the funds. Simonyi paid $35 million for this most-recent trip. Yikes.

Space Smells Funny?
In keeping with the space theme this week, we had to showcase this story about space smelling funny. Yes, that is correct, it smells funny. According to some astronauts aboard the space shuttle Discovery, the smell is similar to burnt gunpowder or the ozone smell of electrical equipment. Read more here.

Ten Strangest Things in Space
Lots of weird stuff going on up in the heavens. From gravity waves to galactic cannibalism, space is the place for some odd things. Learn more here.

Speaking of Space Oddity
Speaking of our favorite “space oddity,” here’s the original video of that song by Mr. David Bowie. You don’t see pop cultural references about space like this anymore. We wonder why that is? Does the artistic community not get inspired by space?

Bowie’s In Space
How could we do a Friday’s Food for Thought post about space and not include this! Enjoy the Flight of the Concord’s classic “Bowie’s in Space” video:

Have a great weekend!
