Friday’s Food for Thought

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief

As we head into the weekend, we would like to share some news and insights surrounding the geospatial intelligence/GIS world that is interesting, cutting-edge and sometimes strange in our new section called “Friday’s Food for Thought.” Last week’s premier “Food for Thought” column covered potential new defense secretary candidates (Richard Danzig), and in news-in-the-same-vein, we mentioned USGIF board member, Chris Tucker, being the “dark horse” candidate for CIA Director (although this was a mid-week post for us), Twitter being a tool for terrorists and other news.

This week, we have a Thanksgiving-like potluck of news to share. First, while the consumer world has embraced the use of geospatial technologies — in fact, Apple just updated its iPhone software to have Google Street View — the enterprise world has yet to embrace our technologies. Until now…and in other news:

- The Pentagon is requesting information for a commercial space-based SAR deal…it’s still only a request for information at this point.

- Live television is always dicey…anything can happen and it did to this weatherman.

- Saturday Night Live did a spoof on CNN’s ‘Magic Map.’ We could see this one coming on election night.

- In other funny news, the U.S. Airforce developed its version of the “baby” commercial.

- Finally, it’s not often we get to write about bands like Radiohead, so here’s our opportunity. The video of band’s amazing song “House of Cards” using LIDAR technology and opened it up to community to tweak/customize. Check out more here.
