Added by Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Next up, Bruce Carlson, Director, National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) took the stage at GEOINT 2010. Mr. Carlson started his keynote with a compelling video about the September 20 launch of the Atlas V spy satellite. From there, he discussed key items regarding the NRO: new aggressive launch campaign, signed memorandum of agreement and the 50th anniversary.

We recall when Mr. Carlson spoke at GEOINT 2009, he highlighted how the aggressive launch campaign is vital to the success of the NRO. With the successful Atlas V launch, the NRO is poised to do approximately 4 additional launches in 2010 and 2011 – capping what is the most aggressive launch campaign in 20 years.

He also discussed how the NRO has an aging constellation that is “old enough to take Geritol.” New innovations including tying in the collection capabilities with geo-location, and how it’s all about providing a “picture with a dot” for the warfigher – meaning the dot could be an enemy target. Accuracy is also a major challenge for the NRO and Mr. Carlson discussed how precision targeting in Afghanistan is now a critical focus.

From there, he discussed the DNRO priorities, which include executing launches on time/budget, improving business of launch, improving research and technology investment, and investing in the NRO workforce.
Stay tuned for the video of Mr. Carlson’s keynote address.
