GEOINT 2010 Keynote: Letitia A. Long, Director, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) Discusses Online, On-Demand GEOINT Access

The highly anticipated keynote from Letitia A. Long, Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence (NGA) has come to fruition. As the first woman to run a major intelligence agency, the editorial team of got geoint? was excited to hear from this new leader and her vision for the future of GEOINT.
“NGA has earned its place at the table. No one would go to war, or respond to a natural disaster with out us,” said Long at the beginning of her key note address.
Long then highlighted how the next phase of NGA will be all about providing online and on-demand access to GEOINT knowledge – ultimately providing access to the agency’s content, services and expertise. The second goal of this new phase is to create new value by deepening analytical capabilities, going beyond terrain based analysis to focus on human geography.
Long also highlighted how the NGA needs to take advantage of key location-based applications and trends that deliver intuitive and powerful apps for solving a multiple of GEOINT challenges. She also discussed the importance of empowering users to easily take advantage of this new frontier of GEOINT.
“We need to alter the way we thing about data and how we deliver our knowledge,” added Long.
Long’s vision for human geography is about focusing on population trends and cultural insights. This data would then be brought into a spatial structure for discovering patterns and trends that will shape decision-making.
