Google Earth Used by Terrorists in Mumbai

Added by USGIF Category: General

While open source technologies can help foster an open community and bring certain technologies to the masses, the bad guys can use these technologies in ways that are incomprehensible to the average person. This was certainly the case with the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai. According to an article from ComputerWorld, the terrorists who attacked various locations in south Mumbai last week used digital maps from Google Earth to learn their way around — and they used satellite phones, as well as GPS systems.

What do you all think? Does the great equalizing of open source geospatial intelligence tools help our mission of national security? Or hurt it?
