Israel Expands GEOINT Capabilities Over Iran with New Spy Satellite
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
Last night, Israel launched a spy satellite known as Ofek-9 into orbit that will help it more efficiently monitor the region, including Iran. The new satellite increases the speed at which Israel can receive high-resolution images of subjects of interest. The Israel Defense Ministry said that it would join two other active spy satellites in the Ofek series already orbiting the earth, and all three satellites would give Israel considerable coverage of sensitive areas. As Israel considers Iran to be a strategic threat, its expanded GEOINT efforts are aimed at gather intelligence regarding Iran’s nuclear program that Israel believes is meant for developing bombs, despite Iranian denials. In addition, it was just reported that the satellite is now working.
