McCain Lifts Hold on Clapper Though Senator Coburn May Now Stall Confirmation
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Yesterday afternoon, Senator John McCain lifted his hold on the confirmation of General James R. Clapper,
President Barack Obama’s nominee to be intelligence chief, and the “father” of GEOINT. After a bit of political strong-arming, the Obama administration sent the classified intelligence report that McCain had been requesting (to no avail) for a while now. So, the good news is that McCain is now allowing the Senate to vote on the Clapper nomination. The bad news is that Senator Tom Coburn suggested he would consider holding up his nomination if necessary to get a separate intelligence assessment on the threat posed by releasing Guantanamo detainees. The bottmline is that if he is not confirmed this week, he will have to wait until mid-September after the congressional recess. By the way, we would like to remind our readers to check out our exclusive Q&A with General Clapper from 2008 when we launched the got geoint? blog.
