McConnell and Hayden Out? President-Elect Quiet

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

The Washington Post reported yesterday that Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and CIA Director Michael V. Hayden expect to be replaced once President-Elect Barack Obama is sworn in as president.

It seems an influential group of Democrats want the directors out because both supported the controversial Bush administration policies on interrogation and wire tapping. However, some other Democrats and many intelligence experts disagree with the move, citing their leadership and professionalism in a time of instability and what some might call “scandal.”

Through all the speculation, mum’s the word for the Obama transition team:

“Obama transition officials, who have steadfastly declined to discuss the personnel selection process, said yesterday that no decisions have been made regarding intelligence appointments. McConnell and Hayden, both career intelligence professionals, interpret the Obama team not reaching out to them as a sign that they will not be kept on, intelligence officials said.”
