Mr. Charles E. Allen, Former Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Intelligence and Analysis, DHS, Calls Killing Domestic Spy Program a “Mistake”
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief
Mr. Charles Allen, former Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Intelligence and Analysis, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the decision to kill the domestic spy satellite program is a mistake. Mr. Allen told the Associated Press that the imaging could help provide a better understanding of the U.S. land and sea border vulnerabilities, as well as weaknesses in the country’s critical infrastructure that could be exploited by terrorists. As many of you know, Mr. Allen spoke at the GEOINT 2008 Symposium last year.

While I certainly don’t support programs which monitor and observe U.S. citizens and corporations, I do think there are cases which can be made for and supported by domestic satellite imagery, to view larger infrastructure and security issues. Those cases however, don’t have to have imagery of such resolution or granularity that it exceeds what is publicly available through commercial means, or on, say, Google Earth (which is quite good in many cases, and a commercial satellite product).

Agreed.
There’s no justification I’ve seen that leads me to believe we need to be providing state and local governments military-grade satellite intelligence. That would open a box that needs to stay closed.
