National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to Allow War Commanders to Sift Through Video with “ESPN-Like” Ease

It is no secret that one of the biggest challenges that face the GEOINT sector is dealing with an overload of data. We have excelled at data gathering techniques, through synthesizing and disseminating it in time to be actionable is a whole other story. Full motion video (FMV) is no exception. Well, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is addressing this issue by preparing to deploy a suite of tools that allow war commanders sift through live and recorded video with the ease of sports broadcasters. According to this National Defense article, the system is part of a broader agency effort to establish an intelligence network that will allow analysts in operations centers and troops on the battlefield to find pertinent archival video and associated information no matter who collected the data or where it might be stored. And, here’s what Charlie Morrison from Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions (the prime contractor for this system), had to say: “The comparison we like to make is to ESPN, or CNN, or MSNBC.” Seems like a major step forward in helping close the gap when it comes to analyzing video.
