National Security Space Strategy to Focus on Military Protection
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Space, the final frontier for…military security? The Obama administration is expected to announce its National Security Space Strategy (NSSS) in the coming weeks. The word is it will focus on protecting the nation’s space assets primarily from a military perspective. For those of you not familiar with the NSSS, it showcases how the Department of Defense and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence will carry out the U.S. National Space Policy.
As space gets more and more crowded with a diverse number of players with their own interests, the NSSS will most likely address how to safeguard U.S. space assets, such as communications and military satellites, which are vital to national interests. Although, it’s not all about protecting our interests from other nations. As we have highlighted before, there’s lots of junk floating around in space, and this effort hopes to mitigate satellite collisions with all the space garbage floating around out there. So, will this mean that Star Wars-like battles will be happening in space in the near future? Probably not. According to CBS News, the NSSS will likely try to deter hostile action by primarily soft-power means. Read more here.
