New Situational Awareness: Mapping Out Traffic Fatalities on Your Block

We often don’t know the traffic dangers that lurk on our blocks and on major intersections near our homes. And, it’s not very often that we actually see an accident happen. So we are essentially lacking the situational awareness needed to fully understand the dangers that lurk on our roadways. Theoretically, one could sift through Fatal Highway Reporting System (FARS) data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but that would be a cumbersome, mind-numbing effort. Well, a new intuitive map solves this issue and it’s as easy to use as Google Earth.
The US data comes from FARS and includes all fatalities between 2001 and 2009. And, this map was not designed just for rubber-neckers with a morbid curiosity. There is also an app that allows smartphone users to see what traffic-related injuries and deaths occurred on the streets they walk. Check out this video:
