NOAA Mobile App Delivers Aerial and Satellite Imagery to Emergency Responders

Added by Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

It’s no secret that our weather is changing at a radical pace. The fact that we had a major snow storm on east coast in October is a sign that we no longer live in a predictable world when it comes to weather. As we saw at GEOINT 2011, the ability to better manage, predict and respond to natural disasters is vital to saving lives – and geospatial intelligence serves as the foundation dealing with any environmental challenge. In an effort to help better manage these situations, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Geodetic Survey created a new mobile application that delivers aerial and satellite imagery to emergency crews in the wake of natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes.

For example, on the first day of Hurricane Irene, NOAA uploaded 1,500 images of storm damage assessments. And, beta versions of the application were used during the tornado in Joplin and Hurricane Irene, where first responders used it to evaluate equipment supplies for repairing washed-out roads.

The application runs on iOS, Android, and BlackBerry smart phones and tablets. The Web version of the tool can be viewed with Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and other WebKit-based browsers.
