Obama Demands More Intelligence Briefings Per Week; Competition with Bush?
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
When someone is new to a job, it is a natural tendency to want to “do better” than the guy you are replacing. It certainly seems that President-elect Obama is heading in that direction when it comes to national security and intelligence. Although our post yesterday highlights an opinion that Obama team is putting national security on the backburner, the New York Times ran a story about all the homework and preparation that Obama is doing in this vein.
One interesting note is that Obama is demanding seven daily intelligence briefings per week, where as Bush had six briefings. Apparently, this promoted Mike McConnell, who handles presidential briefings as DNI, to joke, “I don’t know if there’s some kind of competition going.”
In addition, Obama held a 5 and 1/2 hour meeting on Monday with his National Security Team (still missing key Intelligence posts). So it certainly seems his is doing his homework and wants to be fully prepared to deal with tough national security issues when he is in office.
What do you all think?
