Obama Signs Executive Order for Responsible Information Sharing

Added by Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

As we head into GEOINT 2011, we are reminded that our community deals with a significant amount of classified data that is vital to the protection of our nation. With the rise in cyber attacks and WikiLeaks gaining notoriety for publically distributing highly sensitive information, President Obama is actively tackling this issue by signing an Executive Order (EO) that addresses structural reforms to the oversight of classified information. The EO highlights methods for bolstering detection capabilities, restricting removable media, and strengthening government-wide governance, coordination, and oversight of classified information.

The Information Sharing Environment (ISE), a government organization that is instrumental in facilitating the safe sharing of information, recently ran a blog post that highlighted the value of this EO as well as the ISE’s role:

The EO formally establishes the Classified Information Sharing and Safeguarding Office (CISSO), integrated within the Office of the Program Manager for the Information Sharing Environment. We are a part of the larger government response to WikiLeaks and will continue to focus on advancing whole-of-government efforts to both share and safeguard classified national security information, including policy, process, technology, and governance. This aligns with our mission to accelerate responsible information sharing across the totality of terrorism, WMD, and homeland security information.

As our readers may recall, we ran a post this summer about the ISE’s annual report to Congress, which advocated for developing standards for responsible information sharing and protection.

We imagine this EO will be a topic of discussion at GEOINT 2011 next week. The editorial staff of got geoint? will be actively covering all high-level keynotes and addresses – so stay tuned for much more throughout the symposium.
