The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Civil Applications Committee facilitates access to U.S. National Systems space-based electro-optical (EO) imagery for natural disaster response; global change investigation;, ecosystem monitoring; mapping, charting, and geodesy; and related topics. The committee’s Global Fiducials Program has overseen the systematic collection of this high-resolution imagery to provide controlled geospatial data time series spanning a decade or more at carefully selected sites to study and monitor changes. Following is an exclusive podcast with Bruce F. Molnia, Ph.D., Executive Director, Civil Applications Committee for USGS. Be sure to check USGS at GEOINT 2011 next week as well!

It’s nice to know that the program I worked in with USGS in the E1 building in Reston in the 1970′s is now out in public and I like to think that I helped it get there. But how about giving it a name that means something to the ordinary earth scientist like, “Global Monitoring” or “Global Change” or “Global Sensitive Change Monitoring” or “Change Alert Program (CAP)”. As an old aerial photo type, to me the word “fiducial” refers to a reference mark on the edge of an aerial photograph. As long as we are trying to be clear about the purpose and accomplishments of the program, how about giving it a striking and understandable name.
