As many of our readers know, our Friday’s Food for Thought post is often peppered with the funny, absurd, sublime and the down-right silly. With this post, we aim to entertain and enlighten (hopefully) our readers as they ride out the last hours of the work week. Today, is going to be very different. On this day, eight years ago, 2,993 innocent people lost their lives in what is the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. So, today’s FFT post is going to pay tribute to those who lost their lives, and to those who are fighting to defend our freedom in Afghanistan and Iraq. Gingrich: Democrats Shown Shameless Willingness to Play Politics with National Security

The political battlefield is heating up surrounding the disclosure that former Vice President Dick Cheney did not disclose a secret counterterrorism program with Congress. Here’s the latest, Pelosi and House Democrats are pushing ahead with plans to hold a series of hearings investigating instances in which intelligence officials may have misled members of Congress. Although, this Op-Ed by Newt Gingrich came out on July 10, it mirrors a key message being touted by the Republicans: Democrats are playing politics with our national security.

CIA Destroyed 92 Interrogation Tapes; TV News Coverage from Around the Horn

This is certainly the biggest breaking news story surrounding the C.I.A. It was reported yesterday that the C.I.A. destroyed 92 interrogation video tapes — which was uncovered in a letter from the Justice Department. This disclosing of this information was part of an ACLU lawsuit that came about after 9/11. Must Privacy be Sacrificed in the Name of Security?

While this story is UK-based, the lead architect of the UK’s government’s national security strategy warned citizens that that more “intrusive methods of surveillance” are needed to tackle the threat posed by modern terrorists. Sir David Omond raised this point in a paper by the Institute for Public Policy. What is most interesting is the candor in actually admitting that citizens’ privacy will be compromised.

Former Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Calls Panetta “Right One to Repair CIA”
