GEOINT 2011 Keynote Video: Bruce A. Carlson, NRO Director, Highlights Future Challenges and Goals

Carlson, Director of the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), highlighted key challenges and future strategies for the future of the NRO, which included driving down costs while effectively servicing the warfighter. NRO Chief Aims to Beef Up 2012 Tech Budget

In an effort to reverse a five year budget slump for the science and technology development programs at the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Bruce Carlson, NRO Director, is pushing for more funding in the 2012 federal budget request. Our got geoint? readers may recall our coverage of Mr. Carlson at GEOINT 2009, where – in his most anticipated keynote – he said that his main priorities were to enhance the business of launch and move more efficiently in launching equipment under construction within the next 15-18 months. His exact words were “don’t screw up and don’t get in the way.” If Mr Carlson is taking this tough approach to enhancing the 2012 science and technology development budget, we image he will get his way. Cheaper, Smaller Network of Spy Satellites Gives Troops on the Ground Their Own Eye in the Sky

KestrelEyeWe all know that launching and managing spy satellites is a major and challenging endeavor. Do you recall NRO Director Bruce Carlson discussing this at GEOINT 2009? Well, there seems to be a new breed of satellite technology that aims to provide the warfighter with instant real-time images of what awaits them at the other side of the ridge. Kestrel Eye, a system of multiple lightweight, low-cost imaging satellites that can be repositioned from the field, aims to be a soldier’s little eye in the sky that beams down some real time images of the surrounding landscape.
