Panetta Does Right Thing by Defending CIA in E-Mail to Agency

Yesterday, the CIA declassified slew of documents that detailed the questionable treatment by the CIA of terrorist suspects. In an effort to defend the agency, CIA Director Leon Panetta sent an e-mail to the agency’s workforce saying it is his “primary interest—when it comes to a program that no longer exists—is to stand up for those officers who did what their country asked and who followed the legal guidance they were given.” He also added that “That is the president’s position, too,” he added.

Former CIA Director and Attorney General’s Strong Opinion on Release of Interrogation Information

It seems that we always have some sort of breaking news on Friday mornings. Last week, Scott Large announced his resignation. And, now this week, President Obama released the long-sought dossier of Bush-era secrets on the mistreatment of Al Qaeda terror suspects. Out of the 2,126 articles on this topic on Google News, one in particular stood out — this Op-Ed by former CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden and former Attorney General, Mr. Mike Mukasey. Biden Acknowledges Failure of Not Notifying Congress About Panetta Pick

As we covered before, there are plenty of people applauding Obama’s decision to go with Panetta and others completely down on it. This is is DC after all. Did we expect everyone to agree that he is the ideal candidate for the position? Has there ever been complete harmony on major decisions like these? Probably not, but hey, this is what makes politics interesting.
