US Air Force Confirms ‘Beast of Kandahar’ Drone

BeastThis week, the US Air Force confirmed that it is flying a stealth unmanned aircraft known as the “Beast of Kandahar,” a drone spotted in photos and, until now has been shrouded in secrecy. The RQ-170 Sentinel is being developed by Lockheed Martin and is designed “to provide reconnaissance and surveillance support to forward deployed combat forces,” the air force said in a brief statement. Aviation experts dubbed the drone the “Beast of Kandahar” after photographs emerged earlier this year showing the mysterious aircraft in southern Afghanistan in 2007. Read more here.

GEOINT 2009 Officially Kicks Off With Jeff “Skunk” Baxter

SkunkWell, the time has finally come and GEOINT 2009 is happening as we speak. The editorial team of got geoint? was fortunate enough to just witness the opening ceremonies and the experience was nothing short of awe inspiring. Legendary guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter opened things up with a highly melodious version of the “America The Beautiful” – a surprise to us all. Did you all know that there are viable GEOINT applications in baseball? Neither did we. Today, the Baltimore Orioles and Harris Corporation announced that they have developed realistic virtual 3-D tour of the around Camden Yards called “Virtual Birdland,” which includes the ballpark, surrounding attractions, traffic routes and parking options. The Orioles are the first professional baseball team to employ this new virtual 3-D geospatial visualization technology to enhance their fans’ experience. Read more about it here.
