Friday’s Food for Thought: Breaking It Down ‘Old School’ Spying Style

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, Friday's Food for Thought, General

Welcome to the Friday’s Food for Thought post from got geoint? Yesterday, we ran one of our most popular posts about how, way back in the day, spy satellites dropped exposed film via a parachute. Since that post caught on like wildfire, we thought this week’s FFFT post can be all about spy history. Our dedicated readers and members of the “FFFT fan club” may recall our GEOINT history post last year, which focused more on geographic history. For this post, we are trying to dive a bit deeper and expose some interesting, bizarre and entertaining facts about the history of spying. We hope you enjoy! Oh, and for all you hip, young GEOINTers, just a reminder that March 17 is the deadline to apply to be on the USGIF Young Professionals Group (YPG) Board of Directors. Old School GEOINT: Dropping Exposed Film Via Parachute Back to Earth

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

We will admit that, yes, we are big GEOINT history buffs. For example, one of our favorite sites is the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s “From the Office of the Historian” page. By looking into the past, we get a much clearer picture in terms of how far we have come with geospatial intelligence developments. From today’s commercial satellites distributing imagery to pretty much anyone’s smart phone to advances in LiDAR, we have come a long, long way. Though many of you may remember a time when exposed film (of Earth images) were actually dropped out of a spy satellite via parachute — to be captured by a plane. Yes, much like the fax machine is a relic of the past, so too is this method for retrieving key GEOINT intelligence.

Geo-Location and Small Business: It Really Enhances Sales Growth

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Small businesses are often them most nimble when it comes to embracing social media and geo-location services. By not being tied down by corporate approval processes, small businesses can easily tap into the power of these new resources to retain and grow their customer bases. The NY Times today ran a story about how Pacific Catch, a chain of three seafood restaurants in the Bay Area, is doing just this. A few months ago, the restaurant adopted Foursquare, the geolocation service that allows customers to claim special offers and earn badges by “checking in” to certain locations. When people used the Foursquare application within a few blocks of the restaurant, a special offer popped up on their mobile phones: check in five times and earn a free shrimp ceviche or a Hawaiian poke. Another special rewarded customers who checked in on Foursquare with a free side of sweet potato fries. Such offers have helped lure new customers: more than 1,400 people have checked in at Pacific Catch more than 2,800 times. See small business GEOINT. It works! Read more here.

World First Commercial, High-Res Satellite Celebrates 11 Years On-Orbit

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Plenty of stuff has happened over the past 11 years. We had 9/11, two wars, a deepening recession, jarring political divisiveness, American Idol and all the while, one thing has remained constant: IKONOS, the world’s first commercial, high-resolution Earth-imaging satellite, designed and built by Lockheed Martin and currently operated by GeoEye has achieved 11 years of successful on-orbit operations. A first-of-its-kind satellite, IKONOS was launched on Sept. 24, 1999 to provide high-resolution imagery of the Earth for worldwide commercial and government customers. The spacecraft continues to collect 0.82-meter resolution black-and-white images while simultaneously collecting four-meter resolution multispectral data more than four years beyond its initial design life. These images are used for a wide-range of applications, including land management, environmental monitoring, local and regional government, national security, disaster relief, and other geospatial applications. Congratulations to Lockheed and GeoEye for achieving this major milestone. And, you can read more about it here.

Friday’s Food for Thought: Rainy Day Books That Will Make You Smarter and Better Looking

Added by USGIF Category: General

Welcome to a wet and rainy Friday. For those who live in Seattle, this is pretty normal, but for us folks on the East Coast we are drowning in a sea of rain water and frankly it’s starting to freak us out. “Noah, where’s the ark?” is one of the most common Facebook updates happening right now. So, what better thing to do on a rainy day than read a book. That is right, the got geoint? editorial staff not only prides itself on tapping into all things cool about GEOINT, we also occasionally like to take a load off, fire up the tea kettle and read a good book. What kind of stuff do we read? Well, you guessed it…geography- and IC-related books (yes, we are GEOINT nerds). Though we do want to read the new Jonathan Franzen book. And oh, watch out…Snooki is writing a book (no joke.) Check out our latest installment of cool reads in this post. Happy Friday!
