GPS 2A-11 Satellite Retires After 20 Years of Service

Back in 1991, the GPS 2A-11 satellite was launched into orbit and played a major role in shaping the use of GPS, which has allowed billions of people around the globe to be more spatially aware. Well, this past weekend, the GPS 2A-11 satellite was replaced when the 50th satellite to enter the GPS constellation was launched (the GPS 2F-2 satellite) into orbit. As Space.com pointed out, the middle-of-the-night launch could appear to be routine, but replenishing the navigation network is vital to the military forces, civilian consumers and the blossoming commercial marketplace that have come to depend on GPS every day.
