My How Things Have Changed: CIA Declassifies WWI-Era Secret Documents
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Often looking into the past makes us realize how things have changed and progressed. Remember life before the Internet? Seems kind of odd to think that more than 15 years ago, we were not hyper-connected to each other — and phoning and faxing were the only way to get things done. Well, the same can be said about how intelligence gathering techniques have changed over time. From the evolution of GEOINT being the common denominator for all other layers of intelligence to the rise of innovative intelligence gathering and sharing technologies, the Intelligence Community (IC) moves at a very quick pace when it comes to innovation. Though back during World War I, the IC used some very interesting intelligence-gathering techniques that could come straight out of a Hollywood movie.

Spies All Around Us: Dulles-Chantilly Region Key Area for Intelligence Community
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

There must be something in the air. Or is it the water? Over the past couple of weeks there have been some pretty sensational stories about the Intelligence Community. First, we had the Russian spies, then the Washington Post’s expose on the IC (well timed, right before Clapper’s confirmation hearing – but we digress), and stories about the lack of GAO oversight for the community. And, CBS News recently ran a story about how top secret spy work is done in neighborhoods around the Washington DC area. One of the areas highlighted, in addition to Fort Meade, is the Dulles-Chantilly region.

White House Threatens to Veto Intelligence Bill Over Transparency and Oversight Issues
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
The White House threatened to veto the Intelligence Authorization bill because its demands for transparency and oversight would, in some cases, put American lives at risk, in the view of the Obama administration. President Obama’s budget director, Peter Orszag (pictured), sent letters to the heads of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees on Monday stating the that the House and Senate Intelligence Authorization bills “and their classified annexes still contain several provisions of serious concern to the Intelligence Community (IC). Three categories of provisions are so serious that the President’s senior advisers would recommend that he veto the bill if they are included in the version presented for his signature: the Congressional notification provisions, GAO provisions, and provisions regarding the amounts authorized for the National Intelligence Program.” What do you all think? There is a fine line between transparency and risking the lives of those who work in the IC. Check out the Washington Posts’s coverage here.
