GEOINT 2011: Congressman Rogers and Congressman Ruppersberger Confirmed for Joint Keynote Presentation
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Last month, we did a post about how USGIF opened up with a string of hits (to use a rock n roll metaphor) by announcing a list of incredibly high-caliber speakers slated to present at GEOINT 2011. Well, it is often impossible to follow up a hit record with another hit (yes, keeping in the rock ‘n roll vein), but the Foundation did it again. Earlier this week, USGIF announced that Rep. Mike Rogers, Mich-8, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee for Intelligence, and Rep. C. A. Dutch Ruppersberger, Md-2, ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee for Intelligence, will provide a joint keynote presentation during the eighth annual GEOINT Symposium. Both Congressmen are seen greeting CIA Director Leon Panetta in the above photo. That is correct two of the most influential leaders who shape policy with regards to the Intelligence Community are now on board. Be sure to check out the rest of this post for the full line up of speakers. See you all in San Antonio!

CIA Chief Panetta Winning Over Doubters at the Agency
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
As many of our readers know, Leon Panetta has had a fairly rough go at being the somewhat-new Director of the CIA. Many CIA veterans questioned his lack of formal intel experience, and when he failed to protect the agency from the political backlash over its Bush-era detention and interrogation practices, many felt that he may not be the best man for the job. Recently, however, Panetta has made major strides in overcoming these doubts — especially for successfully defending the agency’s turf from Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair. This week, Time Magazine ran an indepth story about his turnaround, which you can read here. Also, check out this “2 minute bio” from Time as well here.

Panetta Does Right Thing by Defending CIA in E-Mail to Agency
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief
Yesterday, the CIA declassified slew of documents that detailed the questionable treatment by the CIA of terrorist suspects. In an effort to defend the agency, CIA Director Leon Panetta sent an e-mail to the agency’s workforce saying it is his “primary interest—when it comes to a program that no longer exists—is to stand up for those officers who did what their country asked and who followed the legal guidance they were given.” He also added that “That is the president’s position, too,” he added.
