Welcome to the Friday’s Food for Thought post from got geoint? As always, we hope everyone had a productive week and is enjoying the final weeks of summer and vacation season. As the GEOINT community knows, it was a very big week. Well actually a very big two weeks. General Clapper was confirmed as the new DNI and Letitia Long was inducted as the new Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), while breaking down major barriers by being the first woman to head an Intel agency. So, this week’s FFT post is all about breaking down barriers and the major strides that women have made. Happy Friday!

As most of us know, today was a special day in the GEOINT world. The U.S. intelligence community got its first female head of a major agency as intelligence veteran Letitia Long took over the helm at the National Geospatial- Intelligence Agency (NGA). Welcome to the Monday Morning News Kick Off post on got geoint? It has been a whirlwind few days for the GEOINT community. Late last week, General Clapper was confirmed as the new Director of National Intelligence. And, today, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is hosting a ceremony that will honor the elevation of Letitia A. Long as its new director. You all may recall got geoint? was instrumental in announcing this news back in February. Next NGA Director Discusses Role of Women in the Intelligence Community

Last month, we announced the appointment of Letitia Long (pictured with Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair), deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency director post. This was certainly major news for the intelligence community because Long will be the first woman to lead a major intelligence agency. Here’s what she had to say during a Pentagon Channel interview about this very topic: “I am certainly aware of all the women who have come before me, all of the women who have accomplished truly remarkable things and have blazed the path.” In addition, Long also noted that the intelligence and defense communities have gained a tremendous amount by incorporating both just women and minorities. Breaking News: Gates Announces Letitia Long as New NGA Director

Yesterday, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced that Letitia Long, deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, will serve as the next director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). Long will assume the NGA leadership later this year, and will be replacing Navy Vice Adm. Robert Murrett who has served as NGA director for 4 years.
“Yet another great leader for NGA and the NSG,” said USGIF President Keith Masback about the announcement. “I’ve had the privilege to work with and around Tish on and off for more than 10 years. She has a unique set of experiences that have prepared her superbly for this opportunity. Moreover, Tish has a well-deserved reputation of going at every challenge with drive, passion and common sense.”
