U.S. Air Force’s SBIRS GEO-1 Satellite Delivers First Infrared Imagery

On June 21st, the Lockheed Martin-built Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) geosynchronous (GEO-1) spacecraft reached a major milestone by beaming down its first infrared image to the SBIRS ground station. Launched on May 7th, the SBIRS GEO-1 Satellite is meeting performance testing requirements and is the most technologically advanced military infrared satellite ever developed. With the goal of enhancing the military’s ability to detect missile launches around the globe, the SBIRS GEO-1 will support the nation’s ballistic missile defense system. It will also expand technical intelligence gathering abilities and enhance situational awareness for warfighters on the battlefield.

National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to Allow War Commanders to Sift Through Video with “ESPN-Like” Ease

It is no secret that one of the biggest challenges that face the GEOINT sector is dealing with an overload of data. We have excelled at data gathering techniques, through synthesizing and disseminating it in time to be actionable is a whole other story. Full motion video (FMV) is no exception. Well, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is addressing this issue by preparing to deploy a suite of tools that allow war commanders sift through live and recorded video with the ease of sports broadcasters. According to this National Defense article, the system is part of a broader agency effort to establish an intelligence network that will allow analysts in operations centers and troops on the battlefield to find pertinent archival video and associated information no matter who collected the data or where it might be stored. And, here’s what Charlie Morrison from Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Solutions (the prime contractor for this system), had to say: “The comparison we like to make is to ESPN, or CNN, or MSNBC.” Seems like a major step forward in helping close the gap when it comes to analyzing video. USGIF is excited to announce that Alexander Martinez, a staff engineer at Lockheed Martin will be the very first Young Professionals board member. Mr. Martinez joined Lockheed Martin in 2002 after graduating from Duke University and has spent the majority of his career working on programs supporting the Intelligence Community around Washington, DC. U.S. Launches New GPS Satellite; Provides Significant Upgrades

Many of our readers may have seen our recent article about how aging U.S. Air Force GPS satellites could potentially provide incomplete driving directions and decrease the accuracy of military strikes. Well, it seems that the Air Force and Lockheed Martin have made tremendous strides in addressing this issue with the launch of a global positioning satellite from Cape Canaveral yesterday morning. It was the last of eight GPS satellites modernized by Lockheed Martin Corp.’s Navigation Systems team, and is surely a step in the right direction for mitigating potential GPS and military strike problems.
