Gingrich: Democrats Shown Shameless Willingness to Play Politics with National Security

The political battlefield is heating up surrounding the disclosure that former Vice President Dick Cheney did not disclose a secret counterterrorism program with Congress. Here’s the latest, Pelosi and House Democrats are pushing ahead with plans to hold a series of hearings investigating instances in which intelligence officials may have misled members of Congress. Although, this Op-Ed by Newt Gingrich came out on July 10, it mirrors a key message being touted by the Republicans: Democrats are playing politics with our national security.

Welcome once again to the Monday morning news kick off. We hope everyone had a restful weekend. As many of us were en-route to San Diego this weekend for what will be a most exciting ESRI International User Conference (stay tuned for more ESRI coverage), we wanted to catch up on the latest news headlines from the past few days. White Houses Keeps National Security Briefings Close to the Vest; Threatens Veto

In his second ever veto threat, President Obama has threatened to veto a Democratic-backed bill that expand the number of lawmakers who can be briefed by the White House on covert national security operations. The White House Office of Management and Budget issued a statement yesterday (below) that said it does support many provisions in the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 The bill is currently making its way through the House. But it had “serious concerns with a number of provisions that would impede the smooth and efficient functioning” of the intelligence community.

After Showdown About C.I.A. Interrogation Techniques, Pelosi Popularity Declines

Our reader may recall our coverage last month — thank you all for the colorful comments — of the showdown between the C.I.A. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) over what she knew about C.I.A. interrogation techniques. Well, it seems that as a result there has been some backlash: her popularity has plummeted. According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll, only 38 percent of Americans approve of Pelosi’s performance as speaker, while 45 percent disapprove of her performance — the lowest approval rating Pelosi has received in the Post/ABC poll. What do you all think? Do you think the dip in approval had to do with her dust-up with the C.I.A.? It certainly did not help!
