Friday’s Food for Thought: Our Ode to Earth Day
Added by USGIF Category: Friday's Food for Thought, General

Welcome to the Friday’s Food for Thought post from got geoint? As our faithful readers know, we like to honor Earth Day, because well, GEOINT, or humanity for that matter, would not exist without good old mother Earth. And let’s not forget that Earth Day turns 41 today. Yes, last year was a big deal — the big “40″ — but who really honors a 41st anniversary? Well, we do. And on a separate note, USGIF is hosting, in conjunction with Women In Technology (WIT), its “Meet the Agency” event where attendees got to learn more about the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency(NGA) on Monday. Be sure to mark your calendars and happy Earth Day!

India Enhancing Efforts to be Dominant Player in Space
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
India is making grandiose plans to advance its efforts when it comes to being an international player in the “Space Race.” Through community-based programs, India’s space agency has been partnering with schools in remote areas to teach students about space exploration and cutting-edge technology. The agency is also training thousands of young scientists and, in 2012, will open the nation’s first astronaut-training center in the southern city of Bangalore. The goal of the effort is to expand India’s international profile in space and catapult it into a space race with China.

D.I.Y. GEOINT: Students Launch Camera to Edge of Space
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General, Young Rising Star
Let’s face it. Most GEOINT technologies are very sophisticated and costly. And, rightly so…they protect our troops and our nation. You can’t put a price tag on that. But, what if we told you that for a mere $148.00, a couple of MIT students launched a camera to the edge of space and took some amazing photos of earth. It is the ultimate tale of D.I.Y. GEOINT. Hey, did we coin a new term here? Is this the next trend in GEOINT? Enterprising and creative people devising ways of launching items into space. You all may recall that for $8,000, you can launch your own personal spy satellite. But, this is taking it to the next level — a grassroots, everyman-on-the-streets approach to GEOINT.

Friday’s Food for Thought: Here Comes the Rain Again; Sun, Sun Sun Here We Come
Added by USGIF Category: Friday's Food for Thought
Welcome to Friday’s Food for Thought. For this week’s theme, we decided to focus on a topic that has impacted us tremendously over the past several weeks: rain. Yes, that is right…rain. The month of June was been one of the soggiest to date with flood warnings in the Washington DC area, NYC being soaked, and in Philly receiving 3.40 inches of rain so far this month. So, what’s the deal? Are we all getting tired of this (rhetorical question, right)? Well, hopefully, this blog post will help us get through the “rain blues,” because surely there is a sunshiny day around the corner. Enjoy and happy Friday!

NASA Heading Back to The Moon
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief
After nearly 37 years, NASA is going back to the moon. That is correct. Although this time, no human will be making a “giant leap.” It will be a satellite-mounted camera and a Kamikaze robot scout that will, according to NASA, pave the way for us to eventually step on the moon again. In what is being billed as a two-in-one mission, called the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/Lunar Crater Observation Sensing Satellite, the agency considers the project its most exciting moon mission in nearly four decades, and launches a review of NASA’s plans to put astronauts on the moon in 2020.
