MIT Wins DARPA’s Red Balloon-Spotting Contest

RedBalloonMassachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers took less than nine hours to find 10 red weather balloons that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) had placed randomly in public places around the United States as part of its “Network Challenge.” The winners from MIT used what is called an “inverse pyramid” approach to locate the coordinates for 10 red balloons in less than nine hours, claiming the $40,000 contest prize. About 4,300 teams participated in the contest, and the Pentagon will study the results to better understand how social networking can solve large-scale problems that require fast solutions.

BREAKING NEWS: Fighter-Jet Project Breached by Cyberspies

This morning, the Wall Street Journal broke this story about computer spies breaking into the Pentagon’s $300 billion Joint Strike Fighter project – DoD’s costliest weapons program to date. According to the article, the intruders were able to copy and siphon data related to design and electronics systems, making it potentially easier to defend against the plane. The good news is that they could not access the most sensitive data kept on computers not connected to the Internet.

Pentagon Planning to Fly Spy Blimp 65,000 Feet in the Air

The Pentagon recently came out with the new that it intends to spend $400 million to develop a giant blimp that will float 65,000 feet above the Earth It will fly for 10 years and will provide intricate radar surveillance of the vehicles, planes and even people below.

Today’s Washington Post featured an fascinating article about Martin Waldseemueller, whose world map from 1507, which is in near-perfect condition and with no other known copies, is the oldest document that labels “America” as the land mass between Africa and Asia.

Also, in more recent news, it seems the Pentagon has given industry a few more days to respond to a request for information on the provision of space-based synthetic aperture radar imagery.
