As the GEOINT community continues to grow, USGIF believes that it is important to increase the involvement of young people as they will become the future GEOINT leaders of our industry, government and academia. As such, in 2009, the USGIF Young Professionals Group (YPG) was formed to unite junior GEOINT professionals within the Defense and Intelligence communities. This group offers events and programs that parallel the Foundation’s mission of advancing the geospatial intelligence tradecraft. Speaking of busy weeks, the Pentagon proposed its future budget cuts yesterday. While this will certainly usher in an era of “doing more with less,” there will still be plenty of growth opportunities in the GEOINT sector. New Solution for Keeping Deep-Penetrating Bombs and Missiles on Target

USGIF member company Raytheon and its partner Airborne Systems are developing navigation and guidance solutions that will keep deep-penetrating bombs and missiles on target in conditions where signals from GPS satellite satellites are degraded or unavailable. Under an $11 million contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, Raytheon is developing this technology as part of the Air Force High Velocity Penetrating Weapon program.

Ethno-Mapping: New Discipline for Mapping the Human Story

Knowledge from our elders is often lost over time. This leaves new generations to forge for themselves without any historical insights as to where they came from, which ultimately impacts the future. One researcher is changing all of this with a new discipline called ethno-mapping that will allow us to map and cull from historical data from our ancestors. And, yes, GEOINT plays a major role in this new area of learning. Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey, the first Polynesian Explorer and female Fellow in the history of the National Geographic Society, is at the forefront of this new movement to essentially map the human story.

Best Maps of 2011: A Defining Year in Mapping and Spatial Analysis

The week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is the perfect time for reflecting, looking back and checking out all of the “Best of” lists of 2011. Of course, there are plenty of lists like this when it comes to popular culture and entertainment. Though, what about the Best of Maps in 2011? Fortunately, this list does exist and it totally delivers. From the Twitter language map by Eric Fischer to mapping road casualties — we covered both this year — this list reinforces that the utilization of open source data and technology such as Google Fusion Tables have allowed the most creative to come up with innovative maps. GEOINT 2011 Hits Record Numbers of Exhibitors and Attendees

Once again the GEOINT Symposium broke new boundaries. The Foundation just announced that GEOINT 2011 attracting 4,451 attendees and exhibitors from the defense, intelligence and homeland security communities. For those who attended, it was a rare opportunity to explore the latest technologies from 252 exhibitors as well as hear from and meet with key Defense, Intelligence and Homeland Security Community leadership.

NOAA Mobile App Delivers Aerial and Satellite Imagery to Emergency Responders

It’s no secret that our weather is changing at a radical pace. The fact that we had a major snow storm on east coast in October is a sign that we no longer live in a predictable world when it comes to weather. As we saw at GEOINT 2011, the ability to better manage, predict and respond to natural disasters is vital to saving lives – and geospatial intelligence serves as the foundation dealing with any environmental challenge. In an effort to help better manage these situations, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Geodetic Survey created a new mobile application that delivers aerial and satellite imagery to emergency crews in the wake of natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes.
