The Election is Done…What’s Next For Our Community?
Added by USGIF Category: General
Last week at GEOINT 2008, we heard lots of discussions about prospective budget cuts in the wake of the election. Many folks said that it is inevitable — no matter who won the election. And since the intel community is essentially a-political (as highlighted by the Director of National Intelligence last week at GEOINT 2008), does it really matter who comes into office? Would it be different if McCain won last night? Will the cuts be as deep as the ones in the 1990s with this new administration?
Here’s a link to an Aviation Week article on where Obama will go with defense. There is one quote from the Obama camp in that article that resonates with our our tradecraft:
“We must adapt and make tradeoffs among systems originally designed for the Cold War and those required for current and future challenges. We need greater investment in advanced technology ranging from the revolutionary, like unmanned aerial vehicles and electronic warfare capabilities, to systems like the C-17 cargo and KC-X air refueling aircraft–which may not be glamorous to politicians, but are the backbone of our future ability to extend global power.”
We welcome your thoughts, comments and feedback on this one, and please don’t hold back.

While it seems counter-intuitive to most people in defense, defense spending actually fared better under Democrats than Republicans from 1946 through 2001. My theory is that Democrats have to fund defense more richly than Republicans to shore up their position with the public, which broadly equates Democrats as weak on defense.
