Today is GIS Day(@Mason)

Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

Did you know that the third week of November every year since 1987 has been Geography Awareness Week? A global celebration supported by the National Geographic Society and other organizations, the week promotes geographic literacy in schools, communities and organizations, with a focus on the education of children.

USGIF will be at George Mason University today from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. taking part in its GIS Day@Mason. Presentations in the Johnson Center will include “The Role of GIS in Geospatial Intelligence” from USGIF President Keith Masback among others. Ongoing GIS software demonstrations and exhibits to develop your skills in digital mapping will take place in the Fenwick Library. GMU kicked off Geography Awareness Week with World Ball Night on Monday.

GIS Day is always held on the Wednesday during Geography Awareness Week. From the snow-capped peaks of Nepal to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, from the jungles of Peru to the asphalt and steel of New York City, events are scheduled in 74 countries and all 50 U.S. states.

Interested in participating? There are many resources for educators online and the ESRI Education team has free materials available for GAW too.

The week’s events include a different focus for each day of Geography Awareness Week:
Monday—Human Geography/Cultures
Tuesday—Physical Geography/Environments
Wednesday—GIS Day
Thursday—Global Hotspots
Friday—Geography on the Job
