USGIF Members Dominate the Washingtonian 50 Great Places to Work List

WashingtonianSmallFor a while now, we have been touting the merits of pursuing a career in GEOINT. You get to work with innovative technologies, solve national security issues and protect our great nation. Well, the well-respected Washingtonian Magazine further validated our belief that the GEOINT community offers the best career opportunities by naming five USGIF members to the annual 50 Great Places to Work List. Congratulations to all of these members who include Booz Allen Hamilton, Mitre Corp., Integrity Applications and NetApp.

Here’s the official list from Waashingtonian and why each company/organization made the list:

Booz Allen Hamilton (USGIF Strategic Partner-level Member) of McLean, Va.
Full Time Staff (Local/Total): 13,444 / 19,282
Why It’s a Great Place to Work: Employees are proud of Booz Allen’s reputation and its work on issues from health-care reform to cybersecurity. Perks include on-site child care; up to $50,000 for in-vitro fertilization; an elder-care-management program; a learning center with on-site and online classes; and a 10%-of-salary contribution to the retirement plan. One of the area’s largest firms, it throws grand events: It rents King’s Dominion each summer for a family day, and its holiday party — with a chocolate room — is at the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center.

Why It’s a Great Place to Work: IAI treats its people well–they give it high marks for pay, challenging work, manager support, flexibility, and integrity. Of 50 hires last year, 82% were staff referrals–they like it that much. Two very nice perks: IAI puts $1,200 into an employee’s flexible-spending account and 10% of salary into a 401(k). Art for the firm’s holiday cards is made by employees’ children. Every 2 1/2 years, IAI has taken each staffer and a guest on a company-paid trip.

Why It’s a Great Place to Work: Employees of this California-based company love the trust and flexibility they’re given–half telecommute weekly. A supportive culture, NetApp offers five days of paid volunteer leave a year, lengthy time off for new moms (28 weeks) and dads (12 weeks), health-care coverage for autism, and $11,390 toward adoption.

National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (USGIF Strategic Partner-level Member) of Bethesda, Md.

Why It’s a Great Place to Work: “We’re the nation’s eyes,” says Steve Honda of NGA. This agency helps protect America at home and troops abroad, supports national and international disaster relief, and provides daily intelligence to the White House, CIA, and Department of Defense. By 2011, NGA will be in a new state-of-the-art facility in Springfield, with expanded dining and fitness services. Pays 100% tuition and books; three paid hours a week to exercise on-site.
