USGIF SAR Workshop: Opportunities in Synthetic Aperture Radar
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General
Here we are bright and early out in Reston at the USGIF Workshop: GEOINT Applications of Commercial SAR, sponsored by Observera and hosted by Oracle. This exclusive event, only 100 spots available, sold out very quickly will highlight commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) opportunities and challenges. To learn more about SAR, check out this exclusive got geoint? podcast with Todd Jamison, CEO of Observera.
Regarding the opportunities with SAR, historically, there have only been a few nations that truly dominated the space arena when it comes to satellite technologies. Over the past several years, space become more accessible to different nations, as well as a dramatic increase in new techniques for gathering satellite imagery.
The United States, for a variety of reasons, has traditionally focused on developing and deploying electro-optical satellites by some of the most cutting-edge commercial providers like our member companies DigitalGlobe and GeoEye – while other countries have explored other parts of the spectrum, which is Synthetic Aperture Radar. For example, companies in Germany, Israel, Japan and Italy, among others, have a track record of building commercial-class Synthetic Aperture Radar, which is allowing us to look at the globe in a fundamentally different way.
Synthetic Aperture Radar offers several advantages over electro-optical satellites, but the most important is that it works during the day and night, in any weather condition – regardless of cloud cover or other weather patterns. The bottom-line is that it is critical for defense and intelligence agencies to access key images at all times, no matter what the conditions.
So, be sure to come back to this blog throughout the day. In addition, we will be tweeting extensively from this event as well.
