Volunteering Makes the GEOINT World Go ‘Round
Added by USGIF Category: Daily Intelligence Brief, General

While the sun’s gravitational pull makes the world, technically, go ’round, volunteering essentially makes our GEOINT world do much of the same thing. We collectively achieve major goals and break boundaries in our sector through the sheer force of giving back. What are we talking about? More on this in a minute. First did you know that the power of participatory philanthropy is on fire right now? Check out the this infographic from GOOD called “Interactive Transparency: The Power of Volunteering” that showcases an aggregation and visualization of the hours that people work and the causes they help. Learn more about how this same desire to “pitch in” is playing a major role in the growth of the GEOINT sector in this post.
As our readers know, the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) is a non-profit educational foundation that relies on the support of its members and the commitment of its volunteers. The reason why USGIF provides so much for the community is because it’s the community that drives much of its progress. We highly recommend you check out this “From the Desk of the President” column by Keith Masback, USGIF President, in the latest issue of Geospatial Intelligence Forum on this very topic. Mr. Masback provides key insights into how you can get involved more with the Foundation.
And, let’s not forget about the young people who are the new generation of GEOINTers. At GEOINT 2010 in New Orleans, the USGIF Young Professionals Group met for a special YPG Orientation and Service Project that included working with Beacon of Hope Resource Center, which provides a model for recovery in neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Katrina, as well as other areas affected by disaster. The USGIF Young Professionals Group worked in the Filmore Gardens Neighborhood located in the 7th Ward of New Orleans, LA. Locals from the neighborhood assisted with the project and informed the group about the Filmore Gardens Neighborhood.
Be sure to check out the official video from of the YPG Orientation and Service Project here. That’s right. Volunteering truly makes the world go ’round!
